HOW TO HOST A GARDEN PARTY
There's plenty of sport to enjoy this summer - FIFA World Cup, Wimbledon, British Grand Prix, Commonwealth Games and Women's Rugby World Cup to name a few - so it's time to get your garden ready for entertaining.
It’s sunny outside, the birds are chirping and your favourite sport is going to be on the box. You know what this calls for - a garden party!
By throwing your hat in the ring as host of the party you also take on all of the stress of organising the event. This celebration of sport and the warmer weather should be a time to enjoy the company of your friends and family, not be running around like a headless chicken.
Throwing a stress-free bash is all in the planning - enough space to sit and mingle, readily available drinks and protection from the elements to name just a few things. Our guide takes you through everything you need to get your garden ready for outdoor entertaining and to perfect your summer shindig.
Big screen viewing
First things first - making sure your guests can all enjoy watching the sport.
Ensuring your viewing set-up is ready and working will make sure your garden party starts off right. A fully charged laptop, projector, wireless speakers and strong Wi-Fi should all be on your checklist.
Make sure to test the projector and sound system the day before your event so you can straighten out any snags.
Glare from the sun will be the biggest enemy of your outdoor viewing set-up. You want everybody to have a good view of the screen so minimising glare should be on your watchlist. A cantilever parasol is a great way to block glare from the sun, its crank handle allows for easy adjustment to achieve the best angle and provides some nice shade.

Corner garden furniture gives everyone somewhere to sit
Parties often feel like you're playing a game of musical chairs, as we pull mismatched chairs from all the different rooms in our home to provide seating for all of our guests. But in the garden how do you make sure that everyone has somewhere to sit?
If you're an avid garden party host then corner sofas are your best friend. The continuous seating design allows you to seat more people in a smaller footprint, as well as positioning guests for more natural socialising. Whether you opt for an outdoor corner sofa set or outdoor corner dining set, both will offer ample amounts of space for your guests to enjoy your garden party in comfort.
When you're trying to accommodate a lot of guests you don't want to be cramped up! If you're in need of additional seating then outdoor footstools and benches are a great option. They aren't bulky so won't take up much space but mean that everyone has somewhere to perch.
Have you invited the kids as well? The Bellagio round swivel daybed offers ample space and padding, as well as wipeable cushions, making it a great seating option for your younger guests. All the kids can hang out together and lounge in comfort.

Weatherproofing your garden set-up
The Great British weather is an unpredictable beast, even if the forecast is saying bright sun you might get a sprinkling of rain. But no matter if it's bright or drizzly, both require planning to protect your garden set-up.
Gazebos and cantilever parasols are incredibly stylish and excellent for shading larger areas, so are a great way to cover your outdoor sofa or dining set. Not only will they protect your guests from UV rays but if it decides to spit with rain then none of your guests are going to get wet. If you have a smaller space then a parasol is another great way to provide protection from the elements.
Nothing can put a dampening on your party now.

Thinking of hosting an evening soiree?
Now that summer is almost upon us we are enjoying lighter nights, but you don’t want the fun to stop when the sun goes down. That’s why it’s important to perfect the lighting and heating in your outdoor space, so you can keep the party going.
For late night World Cup matches when the air is getting cooler, one of our garden sofa or dining sets with a firepit table will keep you warm and add a cosy ambience to your space. Another way to keep your guests warm is having a basket of blankets in your garden that they can help themselves to when they feel cold. These considerate touches will invite guests to stay a little longer.
As well as being warm, you don't want to be sat in the dark! Lighting solutions like fairy lights and small solar lights are perfect for evenings in the garden as they add a soft glow rather than putting you in the spotlight. This is also important for an uninterrupted viewing experience as soft lighting will minimise any glare on your screen. One of our 3M LED Light Aluminium Frame Garden Parasols is a brilliant option for an evening soiree, as they come with 24 built-in LED solar-powered lights alongside the canopy ribs - providing cover from the weather while lighting up your space.

Bringing the spirits
One of the things that will make your garden party are the drinks. But hosting is a demanding enough job without having to keep going inside to top up everyone’s drinks. Giving your guests easy access to get their own drinks is a game changer.
Set-up a self service drinks area on one of our bar carts with a bucket of ice, glasses, lemon and lime slices, mint leaves and all of your guest’s favourite tipples. Whether you have your signature cocktails, fizzy drinks or fruity mocktails on offer, this is sure to be a hit with your guests.
Hosting tip!
As well as your favourite tipples, it’s always a good idea to include a water dispenser on your self-serve bar so guests can properly rehydrate in the warm weather.
A Great British staple - picky bits
In order to host a stress-free garden party the most important thing to remember is: don’t make life more difficult for yourself! Nobody will be expecting a 5-course banquet. It’s time to break out the picky bits.
Buffet foods like fresh fruit, crisps, dips, a selection of cheeses and meats, little cakes and anything beige is always a winner. Lay it out on your outdoor table, then provide some plates, napkins and cutlery - and voila, everyone has been fed.
Little touches like serving strawberries and cream for dessert if you're watching Wimbledon will make your guests feel like they're in the stands with minimal effort!
Hosting tip!
You don’t want bugs joining your celebrations, citronella candles are a great way of keeping bugs at bay.
Finishing touches
No party is complete without some decorations - and no we're not talking about paper hats and balloons! Subtle touches like cushions with the event or team colours are a great way to set the vibe while maintaining a classy look. Whether you dress your outdoor sofa with our Baja Abstract Monochrome Cream Fringe Cushion to bring that F1 feeling or our Eliza Scarlet Red Striped Ruffle Cushion to cheer on England. (Just remember to bring them indoors at the end of the party!)
Last but not least... inviting guests
The most crucial step to planning your party is inviting guests - because without people there's no party! No need for fancy embossed invitations, simply creating a groupchat where you can send out all the important details will do the trick.
Hosting tip!
Add in an approximate finish time so that you don't have to awkwardly shoo people home when you want to go to bed.
Get your outdoor space entertaining ready
Create that groupchat, select your signature drinks and design your space - because it’s garden party season!
Garden LivingGarden DiningGarden AccessoriesFAQs about outdoor entertaining
Q: Should I invest in an outdoor dining or sofa set for entertaining?
A: The key to accommodating large numbers at garden parties is to invest in corner seating, whether that's part of a dining or sofa set. Which type of set you choose will depend on how you most use your garden when entertaining.
An outdoor corner sofa set allows for a more relaxed and informal environment, much like hosting a party in your living room but instead it's outside! Whereas an outdoor corner dining set will suit families that like to cook for their guests and prefer a more structured and formal feel.
If you're looking for the best of both worlds, one of our garden dining sets with a rising table allows you to transition from dining to lounging with ease, simply by adjusting the table height.
Q: I have a small outdoor space, what is the best way to style it for my garden party?
A: Having a compact outdoor space doesn't stop you from hosting a garden party, it just means being smarter about what goes where. Check out small garden ideas for furniture, styling and layout tips to maximise your space.
Q: What do I need to do to get my garden furniture ready for a party?
A: Before a garden party, you want to get your furniture ready for your guests. The first thing to do is check for any loose screws and tighten them, nobody wants a wobbly seat! Then it's best to give your outdoor furniture a quick wipe down to remove any cobwebs and general grime. Wipe down with a soft cloth using a mixture of warm water and a squirt of washing up liquid, rinse with a garden hose and let it dry fully before putting any cushions back on.
Q: How should I care for and store my outdoor furniture after my garden party?
A: Once the party is over, it's important not to just abandon your garden furniture. Take some time to clean up any little drink spillages or dirty shoe marks, and then once completely dry, protect your furniture with one of our bespoke breathable outdoor covers so that it's raring to go for its next use.
