What's a corner sofa, and when is it the right call?
Two seating sections joined at a right angle (sometimes a U shape) instead of a single straight line. More seats, a clear lounging zone, a way to define the living area in an open plan room and beneficial when making the most of a small living room space.
The right call when: your room is open plan, you've got an empty corner doing nothing, you want everyone seated at the same time, have a small living room, or you'd quite like somewhere to actually stretch out for an afternoon nap.
Modular or L shape chaise: which should I get?
Modular comes in separate sections you can rearrange. Turn the corner one way today, the other way next year, split it into two sofas if you move. The Granvia range (curved, in moss green velvet, taupe boucle and ecru boucle) and the Byron Pillow Edge (5 seater corner in moss green velvet) are both fully modular.
L shape chaise has a fixed configuration. You pick lefthand or righthand facing when you order, and that's the layout. The Dipley (oatmeal woven chenille), Daphnis (oatmeal brushed fabric or fern green velvet) and Obriel (grey marl) all sit in this camp.
Modular if you want flexibility, or if your stairwell is awkward and the sofa needs to come up in pieces. L shape if you know your room and want a more traditional shape.
Lefthand or righthand facing: how do I tell?
Stand in the room facing where the sofa will go. If the chaise (the long bit) is on your right, that's righthand facing. On your left, lefthand facing. These terms are often abbreviated as LHF and RHF.
Get this wrong and you'll have a chaise pointing at the wall. Check twice before you order.
Fabric, velvet or boucle: which one holds up?
Honest answer: all of them, if you treat them right. They just behave differently.
Fabric (the woven, brushed and chenille upholstery on the Dipley, Daphnis and Obriel) is breathable, hardwearing, and tends to hide everyday wear well. The most practical for kids, dogs and Sunday roast crumbs.
Boucle (Granvia in taupe or ecru) has a textured, looped surface that adds depth and softness. Forgiving on the eye.
Velvet (Granvia moss green, Byron, Daphnis fern green) has a richer, more luxurious feel. It can show marks and crush in spots, but a vacuum and a soft brush bring it back.
Pick based on the household and how forgiving you need the surface to be.
How do I measure for a corner sofa?
A few things to check before you order:
The room. Length of both walls where the sofa will sit.
The route in. Doorways, hallway widths, stairwell turns. Modular helps here as separate pieces will fit where a single frame won't.
Clearance. Leave 40-50cm between the sofa and a coffee table, and 60-90cm for a walkway behind it if the sofa floats in the room.
Chaise side. Lefthand or righthand facing - see above.
Seat depth. Deeper for proper lounging, shallower for upright support.
Corner cutouts. If the sofa needs to go around a radiator or under a window, measure the gap.
Sounds like a lot but it's worth it. A sofa that doesn't fit is an expensive mistake.
How do I style cushions on a corner sofa?
Start with two larger cushions in the outer corners. Add a couple of medium ones (40-45cm) and a small lumbar or bolster for support. Odd numbers per section look more natural than even.
Where the two sections meet, anchor the corner with a bold or textured cushion that ties both sides together. Mix textures, velvet with linen, boucle with cotton, so it doesn't look too matchy or too flat. Drape a throw over the chaise to soften the lines and add a bit of colour.
Don't overdo it. A corner sofa lives or dies by whether you can actually sit on it.
