What is a sideboard?
A sideboard (sometimes called a buffet) is a low storage cabinet that usually has drawers and cupboards. They’re often used as a hidden space for dinnerware, glassware, table linen, and sometimes everyday clutter that households produce! The top of a sideboard can be decorated, sometimes with a nice lamp, candles, or anything else that might fit your style.
Size and placement of sideboards
The typical height of a sideboard is between 75 and 92cm, while the typical depth is 40 to 50cm, deep enough for plates, but not too wide so it takes over the room. When it comes to length, you should aim for a sideboard that is about two thirds of the length of your table for balance.
Aim to leave at least 90cm between a sideboard and dining table, or more if you use it for serving.
How to style a sideboard
- Start with an anchor item; something large that grabs your attention such as a lamp, tall vase or a print.
- Layer heights; mix tall medium and low objects so the eye moves across the surface.
- Mix textures; change it up with a mixture of ceramics, metal, wood and glass.
- Add greenery; a plant or fresh flowers can brighten things up.
- Keep it functional; a small tray or a bowel for keys can come in handy!
