Counter stools with backs vs backless counter stools
With backs: Best for comfort and support during meals or long chats. Great for families and home offices at the island.
Backless: Clean look, easy to slide under the counter, perfect for small spaces and a minimalist vibe.
How many counter stools do I need?
● Allow 22–24 inches of width per stool.
● If the stool swivels, has arms, or an extra-wide seat, allow 26–30 inches.
● Quick guide:
- 4–5 ft island: 2 stools
- 6 ft island: 3 stools
- 7–8 ft island: 3–4 stools
How high should counter stools be?
● For a 36 inch counter, pick stools with a 24–26 inch seat.
● Leave about 9–12 inches of leg room between the top of the seat and the underside of the counter.
● Thick countertops or aprons reduce leg room—measure from the underside, not just the top.
