Ottoman Beds for Bedrooms That Actually Get Used

Ottoman beds with gas lift hydraulics that reveal the entire space beneath your mattress. One smooth lift and you've got access to storage running the full length and width of your bed. No drawers to wrestle with, no wasted gaps, just one deep compartment for bedding sets, pillowcases, suitcases, or that box of summer clothes you're pretending doesn't exist.

The gas lift mechanism does the heavy lifting (literally), so you're not straining yourself. Choose side opening if your bed sits against a wall, or end opening if you've got clearance at the foot.

From velvet and boucle upholstered frames to linen and faux leather finishes, available in double, king, and super king. Pair with the right mattress for your sleep style.

Worth it if you need the storage, skip it if you don't. Simple as that.

Ottoman Bed Questions

Common questions about how ottoman beds work and whether they're right for your space. Can't find your answer? Get in touch.

What sizes do ottoman beds come in?

  • Double: Great for smaller rooms and guest rooms as they offer storage but in a compact way.
  • King: Extra sleeping space and generous under bed storage.
  • Super king: Hotel style comfort with ample storage for busy households.

Why choose an ottoman bed?

Ottoman beds enable you to make the most of unused space under your bed, with hidden storage where you can keep bedding, pillows and clothes. Having a tidy bedroom can play a big part in ensuring a tranquil environment, which can help you feel more relaxed and sleep better.

How do ottoman beds work?

  • The mattress sits on a sturdy metal frame with slats.
  • Gas lift pistons assist the lift, so you can raise and lower the base smoothly.
  • The storage area is inside the bed frame, under the mattress platform.
  • Choose end lift or side lift based on where you have the most clearance. Safety note: Always follow the assembly instructions, don’t overload the storage area, and keep hands clear of the mechanism when closing.

Side opening vs end opening ottoman beds: which should I choose?

Side opening: Opens from the left or right side. Choose this if:

  • Your bed sits against a wall (or in a corner)
  • You don't have space to walk around the foot of the bed
  • You want to keep bedside tables in place without moving them

End-opening: Opens from the foot of the bed. Choose this if:

  • You have at least 1 metre of clearance at the foot
  • The bed sits in the middle of the room or away from walls
  • You prefer accessing storage from the end

Neither is better. It's about your room layout. Measure your space first. If you can't comfortably walk around the foot of the bed, go side opening.

Are ottoman beds easy to lift?

Yes, if they have gas lift struts (which most do). The gas pistons counterbalance the weight of the mattress and platform, so you're not lifting 30-40kg on your own.

You'll need both hands to guide it up, but the mechanism does the heavy work. Most people can open and close an ottoman bed with minimal effort.

Note: Cheap ottoman beds sometimes use weaker struts. Check product specs for "gas lift" or "hydraulic pistons" before buying.

How much storage does an ottoman bed have?

Depends on the bed size:

Double: 0.8 cubic metres (duvets, pillows, several suitcases)
King: 1 cubic metre (substantial storage, small wardrobe's worth)
Super King: 1.2 cubic metres (enough to clear out an entire cupboard)

Storage depth varies by model (usually 25-35cm deep). Check product specs for exact measurements. Deeper bases = more storage but might feel bulkier in the room.

What mattress works with an ottoman bed?

Any standard UK mattress size works. Double, king, or super king. Match the mattress size to your ottoman bed base size.

Mattress types that work:

  • Memory foam
  • Pocket sprung
  • Hybrid (foam + springs)
  • Latex

Avoid: Ultra thick mattresses (over 30cm) might make the bed feel too high or strain the gas struts. Check your bed's recommended mattress depth.
